The story follows a woman named Aomame embarking on a journey to figure out the bizarre alterations happening in her world. The title is a Japanese play on words of the year 1984, a reference to George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four. The novel sold out upon its first printing and won literary awards including the 2011 Goodreads Choice Awards for Best Fiction.
